Schiller heirlooms.

I haven't been getting my mail for a couple weeks now. The first couple of weeks I was here I got my bills, some junk mail and a lot of mail for the people who used to live in my apartment. Then it just stopped all of a sudden. No bills, no junk, no nothing.

Last week, I got a knock at my door. Turns out my neighbor had been getting all of my mail. Apparently his girlfriend and I have the same last name. Strange coincidence! He brought over a box addressed to me and this beauty was inside:

My Uncle Terry sent this carving to me. Sidenote: I call him Uncle even though he says he's not my uncle, which is technically true. But second-cousin Terry doesn't sound as good. Plus there are too many people in my family; everyone's an aunt or uncle to me. He and Nancy sent this to me as a house-warming gift. It was a carving that my Granddad gave to his sister, Theresa. Theresa is Uncle Terry's mom, and a pretty awesome lady at that. *I'll be sure to do a pretty extensive post on the Schiller family in July- family reunion time!

After Aunt Theresa passed away, Terry inherited it from his dad. And upon moving to Austin, I inherited it from Uncle Terry! How special is that?!

My Granddad was a wood carver. Not just a wood carver, he was more of an artist. Everyone in my family has dozens upon dozens of his carvings. We have so many that we could probably make a museum. What's really neat about his carvings is that everyone kind of feels like they have a special attachment to at least one of them. They're all pretty special because they all have a story behind them. I have a adorable little raccoon at home in California that I have a special affinity for.

I remember my grandparents visiting us in California (they're Canadian, so trips to California were rare) when I was pretty young- maybe 8 years old? We had an ungodly amount of outdoor cats when I was little. Probably as many as 20 at one point. Every night, we'd feed the cats in our backyard. Their food bowls were right up against a large, floor-to-ceiling window so we'd lay down on the floor inside and watch them through the window, eating their food. Every now and then a giant raccoon braved its way out of the bushes to the food bowls and would scoop out the cat food with its little hands. This was the best. My sisters and I loved when the raccoons would come to the window. While my grandparents were visiting, sure enough a big, ol' raccoon came to the window and we had a fantastic time being nose-to-nose with the big guy.

I finally mustered up enough courage (I was a really shy one when I was little. Adults scared me!) and wrote my Granddad a note, asking him if he'd carve a raccoon for me. I passed it to him and he said he would make me one.

A couple weeks later, I got a pretty raccoon wood carving in the mail. That's my carving.

Now I have another special carving, all to myself. I look forward to the day that I get to pass on my wood carvings to someone special enough to receive them.

Being a Stuart.

A couple more photos from Morgan's trip. These make me sad. I wish she were back in Austin, where she belongs!

Like I keep telling you, Morgan is a Stuart and being a Stuart means you're basically an athletic GOD.

Morgan's Godly pose.

For those Wikipedia enthusiasts out there (I heart Wikipedia), Morgan Stuart is related to the wonderful John Stuart. Her dad, John, played football for the University of Texas back in the day and was picked up by the Miami dolphins after graduating.

Pretty awesome, right?

Needless to say, Morgan and her brothers are amazingly athletically gifted. Their mom, Rowena, is the biggest cheerleader I know. She should seriously be a motivational speaker. Rowena encourages and inspires her kids to push themselves and be the best they can be in everything. With John's amazing talents and Rowena's drive, the Stuart kids have worked their butts off to be crazy-awesome athletes. Morgan won a softball national championship. Caleb just beat the University of California of Riverside's record in hammer throwing. And their youngest, Johnny, is a studly high school football player just like his dad.

So since John went to UT for undergrad, Robbie and I drove Morgan around campus real quick so she could see where her dad played football for four years.

Morgan Stuart, you come back to Austin ASAP!

I have SO much going on: photography class, yoga, TxSC blogger conference... AND some exciting, soon-to-be announced news. I can't wait to share it with you all.

Happy Monday!

You saltlicker.

On Sunday, Morgan, Robbie and I met up with some of Morgan's parents' friends for dinner at The Saltlick. I thought The Saltlick would be a nice little BBQ place. I was wrong. It's a tiny BBQ TOWN!

The restaurant is so huge it really seemed like a little village. We had to wait for an hour to be seated, but man oh man it was so worth it.

Morgan and Robbie posing so nicely for the camera.

There was even live music while we waited!

The men got the all you can eat plates. For your own reference, the plates in front of Robbie are the non-all you can eat dinners. Imagine how MUCH those men had to eat to get their all you can eat money's worth!

Up tomorrow: the last of Morgan's trip!

Big Mo.

The one and only Morgan Stuart came to Austin.

In case you didn't Wikipedia her, here's what makes Morgan so awesome:

1. She won a softball national championship with the University of Washington her sophomore year. She's basically the best softball player ever. Now she's running clinics everywhere- Canada, Alaska, Washington, San Diego... she even had one here but it was canceled because of the rain.
So studly.

2. Morgan has the greatest sense of humor. We officially became friends when we bonded on the ride home from a high school softball game by quoting SNL's Best Of Will Ferrell lines. Nobody knows Will like Morgan does.

3. Morgan's a Stuart and that means she's freakishly athletic, very humble, extremely motivated and genuinely kind. The entire Stuart family is awesome.

So I got to spend two and a half days with this little lady and show her around Austin. I'm sorry, let me rephrase: I had two and a half days to convince her to MOVE to Austin (wishful thinking). I think it worked...

One of the many adventures we went on this weekend was a trip to Torchy's Tacos.

Austin has this obsession with tacos. It's totally an Austin or Texas thing because I had never heard of breakfast tacos or any taco place, really, in California that was bombdiggity. Burritos are the hot thing in California.

Let me tell you. Torchy's is where it's at.

Robbie was the third wheel this weekend and he was such a trooper. He drove us everywhere.

I know I gush about how wonderful Robbie is which can get a little disgusting at times. I love the boy, I really do. One thing that drives me absolutely nuts about him, though, is his sense of direction.

He could get lost walking down the street.

So imagine my surprise when he totally outsmarted me when driving to Torchy's on 1st Street. I insisted that there wasn't one there and turns out, he was right! AND he got us there in record time without getting lost.

My b, Robbie. You win.

Torchy's is amazing. I discovered The Democrat taco and it's now officially my favorite. I was obsessed with the shrimp one since I moved here, but The Democrat takes the cake.

Roberto. Goofball.

Torchy's was stealing all the action. This little vegetarian trailer was looking pretty lonely.

Love this picture of Morgan. Totally her.

I wish all of my friends lived close to me.

More pictures from Morgan's visit tomorrow!
